important is your dancing comfort and balance.
CLUES
WHEN SELECTING A DANCE SHOE
If you are a beginner I would recommend a closed toe or peep-toe model
with a 5cm or 6.5 cm high heel. As you gain experience in dance and learn
to maintain your balance you may choose to wear 7.5 cm or 10 cm high heels.
You shoe should not be too tight or loose and arch of your feet should
fit in the sole of the shoe. Especially in Tango high heels may be recommended
to encourage the close dance style that is called “Milonguera Style”.
In salsa heel height should not exceed 6.5cm in the beginning and after.
Naturally heel height is a personal preference. Both in Tango and in Salsa
you may enjoy dancing with low or high heels with equal pleasure. You
may benefit having a couple of pairs of dance shoes in your wardrobe.
For your comfort change your shoes in a dance night at least once.
THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EVERYDAY SHOE AND A DANCE SHOE
The main difference is the sole of the shoe. The material used for the
soles of an everyday shoe is either stout leather or synthetic material
or rubber. Neither of these is suitable for you on the dance floor. Either
your rubber sole will stick on the floor or your leather sole will make
you slip and cause you to lose your balance. This is why soles of dance
shoes are made out of special material, generally of suede leather to
slightly glide and help you move smoothly on the parquet floor but not
too much.
Another important point to consider is the flexibility of your dance shoes.
A properly selected dance shoe should envelope your feet like a glove;
not too tight, not too loose but snugly fit. That is why sometimes flexible
bands or double straps are used in certain models for you to feel more
comfortable. Actually a proper dance shoe should have a closed heel for
you to be able to have a better balance control and improved dance performance.
WHOEVER
NEEDS A PAIR OF DANCE SHOES?
By definition, every dancer, beginner or professional, needs to have a
couple of pairs of proper dance shoes to maintain balance and to have
a better performance on thedance floor. There are a couple of alternatives
for you.
WHICH
MODEL DANCE SHOE IS MORE SUITABLE FOR ME?
Have you ever been to a shop that sells dance shoes and scatter tens of
shoes on the floor? Which one is fit, which one is the ideal heel height
for me? Closed toe? Or open toe? Or maybe a peep toe? If your answer is
‘YES’ then read this page all through…
WHAT
ARE FINE POINTS WHEN SHOPPING FOR DANCE SHOES?
If you are going shopping for dance shoes for the first time, your first
concern should be is the form of the shoe.
If you are a beginner, the model I can recommend is one with a closed
toe or peep toe and with 5 - 6.5 cm medium heel for Tango or Latin dances.
This will make it easier for you to keep your balance. As you get along
with dancing and learn to maintain your balance, you may prefer higher
heels (9 or 10 cm). Another important point is the material used in shoemaking:
Natural leather, suede leather, nubuck, nappa or satin or synthetic materials.
You should be conscious of any change in the form of your shoes due to
deformation of material used. For this reason you should choose a shoe
model that exactly fits you.
MAINTENANCE OF DANCE SHOES
Make sure that you only wear your dance shoes on an indoor dance floor
since the soles are clad with suede leather. Special stout leather or
synthetic sole shoes can be worn both indoors and outdoors. However you
should be cautious not to step on wet floor. Dust may be removed by a
suede brush and stained suede leather shoes may be cleaned by special
suede cleaner. Avoid painting your natural leather shoes. These products
may cause the leather to dry and crack and make the surface dull. I recommend
you use almond oil or an ordinary hand cream. The cream will soften, prevent
cracks and nourish the leather and extend the lifetime.
